When I first started my writing journey, I knew I wanted to write a novel. And I had a rough draft. But sometimes I became stuck. I didn’t know what would happen next. Or if I did, it sometimes wouldn’t work out the way I wanted it to work out.

Luckily, I had joined a local writers group in my local area of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and started attending their Free Writes! These events were led by some of the board of directors. You show up, with your laptop or pen and paper, and the leader would call out a prompt—a short phrase from a poem, a line of dialogue from a novel, a bit of description—and you would write for four to five minutes. After time was up, you could read your work aloud or pass.

It doesn’t sound like a lot of time, but let me tell you, I wrote pretty much half of my novel in Free Writes! And a lot—if not all—of those writings from the shorts ended up in the final draft.

These five minute sprints of writing time could yield up to 400 words if I was typing fast enough. Can you imagine? Four hundred words in FIVE minutes? You can write an entire novel that way: 300 words a day for 300 days. That’s a 90,000 word novel or memoir in less than a year.

So turn to a page, set a timer, and write. Have fun. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling here—that can all be changed later!
